A new series of watercolors! I've been loving painting the pastures and views of Upcountry, Maui lately. Of course, a few of these pieces also come from adventures in other parts of the island too. All are 9x12" including matting. If there is one that you love, drop me a line.
If you drive through Kula, and head up the mountain further, above the Lavender Farm, is Polipoli. It is one of my favorite places to watch the sunset. The whole island stretches below you.

I was driving through Kula, and in one of the pastures was a foal. It couldn't have been more than a few days old! I had to stop and see. sold.
Kaho'olawe and little Molokini sit off the coast of Wailea. Bouganvillia fills the foreground with color. sold.
The road from Kapalua around the back side of West Maui towards Wailuku is not for the faint of heart. If you can stand the one-lane roads along the cliffs, it is one of the most rewarding journeys on the island. This little bay is on the back side of Kahakuloa Head, the peninsula of land that is visible from so many parts of Maui.

If you're driving the back road to Hana, you pass through the sparse community of Kaupo. Hana hustles and bustles in comparison. At Kaupo Store you stop to buy your mid-journey snacks and marvel at the view of Haleakala--all the way up into Haleakala Crater on a clear day.

Thompson Road in Keokea in Upcountry, Maui is a favorite place for a wander. This was inspired by a beatiful day, about an hour before sunset.

The Fleming Arboretum in Ulupalakua has amazing native plants. Most hibiscus plants are not native to Hawaii, but here, there is a giant native hibiscus tree covered in white flowers. The flowers scent the air, something else that makes this hibiscus rare.
Sailing back into Lahaina, you pass the surfers catching the waves that break next to the harbor.

I was sailing back from Lanai to Maui and saw this sail boat off of the West Maui Mountains. Haleakala watched over in the distance. What a perfect day.
The ocean always reflects the sky. Looking from Lahaina towards Lanai as I waited for a ferry to travel to that other island, the colors changed to many shades of purple.

Just above busy Wailuku, Iao Valley is another world. Sitting next to Iao Stream always brings me into to the present moment.

This view is from Fleming Arboretum, the oldest arboretum of native plants in the state. It is located above Ulupalakua, nestled between two cinder cones. The view stretches straight down to Maui's most recent (200 year old) lava flow, and Kaho'olawe Island beyond.
