Homestead at Pu'u Mahoe

Homestead at Pu'u Mahoe

15x30"
oil on canvas

I painted this amazing view above Ulupalakua at the Fleming Arboretum. This sanctuary for rare native plants is nestled in a twin cinder cone.

The cottage in the distance was built by D.T. Fleming, who started the arboretum fifty years ago. The view looks out at Kaho'olawe.

Honokohau

This idyllic spot is on the back side of West Maui, past Kapalua and the snorkeling spot of Honolua, and yet before the road becomes truly wild.

I painted this piece on site at the Maui Academy of Performing Arts anual Garden Party. It is such a fun event! The painting was auctioned off the moment I finished painting it!

January in Hana, Koki beach

January in Hana, Koki beach

24x30"
oil on canvas
Koki Beach in Hana took on a stormy energy when I visited last January. The ocean can be wild in these parts.

Kapalua Coast

Kapalua Coast

24x48"
oil on canvas
On New Year's Day I went to Fleming Beach in Kapalua, and I brought a good-sized canvas with me. What a beautiful way to start the year.

Ke'anae Harvest

Ke'anae Harvest

3x3.5 ft.
oil on canvas
This painting was chosen for Art Maui 2009.
Ke'anae Peninsula is a gem. Go there, and do not rush. Just soak in this piece of old Hawaii.

The fields are of kalo (taro) the staple food of old Hawaii. They are farmed in family plots, and flooded with water from the mountain streams.

At the opening of Art Maui, I met a family who farm the lo'i (taro patches) right in the foreground. They even knew the names of the ducks in the painting!

On the Lava Fields

On the Lava Fields

20x24"
oil on canvas
I was out at Ahihi Kinau, past Makena and Wailea, where Maui's most recent lava flow came down to the ocean. There was a potency in the air--the sun on the lava rock, the ocean swells, wind gusts, and cool clouds ringing Haleakala.
I had to stop right there, and paint.

Pu'u Mahoe Family Trees

Pu'u Mahoe Family Trees

20x26"
ink, acrylic, mullberry paper, on wood
I created this painting to express the layers of history and years of conservation at the Fleming Arboretum in Ulupalakua, Maui.

Ke'anae Peninsula deserves a panoramic view. This is one of my favorite spots to stop and enjoy the motion of the surf on the Road to Hana.

The Canoes Will Launch at Sunset

The Canoes Will Launch at Sunset

20x24"
oil on canvas
I painted as the afteroon rolled towards sunset, and the last preparation were made to launch these canoes, just carved in the weeks before.

Wai'anapanapa Coast

Wai'anapanapa Coast

4ft x5ft4in
oil on canvas
At Wai'anapanapa State Park, in Hana, I followed the coastline along until I could look back at the beautiful Black Sand Beach.
The energy of the scene caught me.
It needed to be painted large so you could feel like you were standing there too.
