I grew up drinking in Maui's colors. As soon as I could drive I started out on Maui's roads with my easel, painting en plein air, and today, these colors still nourish me.
The works painted on site are expressions of the very energy of a place, a home that surrounds us, this island. There still are places where if you stop, and really take it in, there is more there than an awesome view.
There’s a feeling.
Something inside that resonates, that says this place is special. And it's all around us. To experience and share this, that is why I paint—to create an expression of the colors, the light, as it comes through during this extended moment as I stand there, brush to a canvas, in awe.
The painting itself continues that moment. It becomes a joy you can take in every day of your life.
I painted this piece at the summit of Haleakala, my favorite place in the planet. Maui is so varied in geography, from the coastlines, to the rainforest, to spectacular volcanic treats like this. This is a short way down the trail that takes you deep into the Crater. I hiked here all the time with my family when I was growing up. If you're a sturdy hiker who doesn't mind a little altitude (summit's at 10,000 Ft) I recommend it. The view's just breathtaking from the lookout too. (and concerning the weather, my trick is this: CLICK HERE before you drive up there and you'll know what to expect.)
Here I am painting on location in another part of Haleakala Crater.
